Girl's Raglan Sleeve Dress in nani IRO 2019 "Lei nani"
A few days back I just finished a raglan sleeve dress for a small child. First time I've made children's clothes, and first time I've done buttonholes! Planning to give this to a friend's 18-month-old girl. I think it's a little too large for her...but well, she is growing....
Made the dress with nani IRO Basic 2019 season's "Lei nani" pale violet double gauze cotton (colourway K). The dress pattern is Pattern N from the Japanese pattern book Chiisana Kodomo no Tezukuri Fuku by Shingaki Miho (Amazon Jp).1 (English translation in PDF here or see Translation page.)
First time making buttonholes.... (Am indebted to this By Gum, By Golly post and this Bluprint.com post for steps to make buttonholes by hand. I did also look up this tutorial by James Williams.) Was rather surprised just how much work it is to make a single buttonhole.(>o<||)Ran the thread through wax and ironed it. Didn't have buttonhole gimp, and I used embroidery thread instead. Seemed to work ok, and helped stabilise the edges.
So, I struggled and had to re-do the first 2 holes I made. It was also difficult because double gauze has a loose weave and frays easily. I'm not absolutely happy with how they turned out, but well, I'm sure I'll get better with practice.
This project has been a good learning experience. I have 2 nephews, and it's a little hard to find suitable boy clothing patterns.... Not a lot of them around and most patterns revolve around basic shirts, pants, salopette (overalls) and jackets.
This Chiisana Kodomo no Tezukuri Fuku pattern book has some lovely and simple patterns, but most of the patterns are for girls! However, I have a niece due next month, so I guess there will be more opportunities coming up. I am looking forward to attempting a few more from this book when the time comes!
