(Edited on 29 February 2020 (Leap Day!) to upload a photo of the awesome cat that inspired this!)
Made 4 sets of yukata and
hanhaba obi that I've decided to just call "CATS+FISH". I'll be letting these 4 sets go for USD25 per set (shipping not included). Details posted on
my Instagram.
*Update 29.02.2020: 3 sets sold!*
Couldn't resist making the
hanhaba obi out of this super
kawaii cotton fabric from Sheena (
@caramelaw). It's a lovely mustard yellow cotton with a repeated pattern of grey cats. The grey cat print reminded us both of her cat Dusty! Except Dusty doesn't have this Pusheen-like chubbiness, and she has lovely green eyes. In fact, she sometimes gets mistaken for a
Russian Blue.
May have to find a nice photo of her to illustrate her feline awesomeness. See the end of the post for photos of the ever-so-awesome Dusty, courtesy of Sheena!
In terms of process, I usually make the yukata (or kimono) first, and then pick the fabric for the matching obi, but this time the process was reversed.
Originally thought of using
Liberty Tana lawn "Glimmer" in blue for the yukata, but remembered that I had this
kawaii Japanese slub cotton fabric with a cute pattern of fishes that I bought on Etsy back in February 2014. It was a slightly subdued light blue, and the fish motifs were simpler and more linear, so it pairs with the grey kitty fabric better. Or, so I think. Yeah, I know the cat and fish pairing is rather cliched, but it somehow looked right. Playfully so!

The obi knot. Went with something that looks like a cross between the bunko-musubi and the classic chouchou-musubi (ribbon knot). Work in progress. |
