Amigurumi Pineapple Purse (All About Ami) x Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton

For Chinese New Year this year, I made the Amigurumi Pineapple Purse by All About Ami for my niece Claire. "Why a pineapple purse?" I was asked. Because the pineapple is an auspicious wealth and good fortune symbol. And because All About Ami's pineapple purse is just super cute. And because I can come up with all kinds of excuses just to make things for my niece?

Same as the original pattern, I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn. I had a half+ skein of this yarn in the Grass colourway left over from an older crochet project, which was perfect. Not my first time using this yarn, and I find it suitable for crochet bag projects because it's sturdy, fairly durable and can be laundered. I've used it for other bag projects, the star stitch pouch for my bestie and the freehanded crochet messenger bag for Hubby and a current ongoing Two of Wands Costa Market Bag crochet project.

Am never one to follow the pattern exactly. I added 2 more rounds to the pineapple base, so the base totalled 12 rounds, and the last round totalled 72 stitches. To match the increased purse size, each shell stitch round had 12 shells. I made additional shell stitch rounds, totalling 17 shell stitch rounds. My version from R1 of the Base to the last round (R22 in the original pattern) had 30 rounds. Also made 6 pineapple leaves, to match the increased size, and tweaked the leaves from Round 6, for a more gradual increase. The issue though is my version doesn't look anywhere as cute as the original by All About Ami.

In a way, this is rather apt for the occasion, as 6 is considered an auspicious number in Chinese culture. It is associated with good fortune, things going smoothly and happiness. In Chinese, the pronunciation for 6, 六 (liù) sounds similar to the words 溜 (liū), meaning "smooth", and 流 (liú), meaning "flow". Thus symbolising "everything will flow smoothly". This is also exemplified in the Chinese idiom 六六大顺 (liù liù dà shùn), literally "six-six-big-smooth", which means that things are going well. In Cantonese, 6 (luk6) sounds like 祿 and 樂 (lok6) which mean "good fortune" and "happiness" respectively.
