Chinese New Year: Rolled Pineapple Tart (Nastar Gulung) Amigurumi Crochet Pattern・农历新年: 钩针编织黄梨卷
The Year of the Fire Horse is just under one week away now! For Chinese New Year this year, I'm again serving up another batch of crochet pineapple tarts. Rolled pineapple tarts, to be precise. I made these crochet pineapple rolls last year alongside the crochet pineapple tart balls; the latter were the main feature of last year's Chinese New Year.
This rolled pineapple tart version was inspired by the Indonesian nastar gulung. As mentioned in my first pineapple tart post in 2022, pineapple tarts in Indonesia are also known as kue nastar or nastar gulung; the latter literally means "pineapple roll". The pastry of nastar rolls is made with a semperit extruder mould, which gives them their distinctive ridged pattern. I tried replicating the ridged pattern by crocheting in the back loops.

These pineapple rolls may be my final batch of pineapple tarts for my kueh amigurumi project. But it's not the end, as there are other types of amigurumi kueh that I want to explore, make and share about.

This pattern is for the amigurumi pineapple tart roll, aka nastar roll. For the open-faced pineapple tarts or the round pineapple tart balls, please refer to the CNY 2022 pineapple tart pattern or the CNY 2025 pineapple tart ball pattern respectively.

• 2.5mm or 3mm crochet hook
• Stuffing
• Stitch markers
• Scissors
• Yarn needle
• 4.5mm safety eyes (optional)
• Embroidery thread in rose pink (optional)
For these pineapple tart rolls, I used Scheepjes Catona No.522 Primrose and No.383 Ginger Gold.
Abbreviations (US Terms):
MR : magic ring
ch : chain
sl st : slip stitch
st(s) : stitch(es)
sc : single crochet
inc : increase
dec : decrease / invisible decrease
BLO : back loops only
(...) : a set of pattern instructions
[...] : total number of sts in round/row
Finished Size:
The finished size will depend on the yarn weight, hook size and crochet tension.
Pattern Notes:
• How to invisible decrease, see this All About Ami tutorial. For my amigurumi, I used the invisible decrease, but the regular decrease stitch can also be used. For the difference, this tutorial by The Woobles is helpful.
PINEAPPLE JAM
R1. MR, 6 sc. [6]
R2. 6 inc. [12]
R3. (1 sc, inc) 6 times. [18]
R4-10 (7 rounds). 18 sc. [18]
Start stuffing,
R11. (1 sc, dec) 6 times. [12]
R12. 6 dec. [6]
Finish stuffing. Fasten off and weave the end through the front loops of the last 6 sts, and pull to close.
Hide the end inside the work.
PASTRY
R1. Ch 23, then starting in the 2nd ch from hook, work in the back bumps of the ch, 22 sc. [22]
R2-8 (7 rows). Ch 1 and turn, BLO 22 sc. [22]
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
TO COMPLETE
1. Wrap the Pastry round the Pineapple Jam. The Pastry will roughly cover R4 to R9 of the Pineapple Jam. The edges of the Pastry (the sides with the turning chs) should be on the bottom of the work. If the fit is a little too tight, gently stretch the Pastry lengthwise.
2. Match up the edges of the Pastry. Pin in place if needed. With the tail, first make a stitch through a stitch between R3 and R4 of the Pineapple Jam to anchor the first corner of the edge of the Pastry in place. Next, proceed to whip stitch the two edges of the Pastry together. Finally, in the last corner of the edge of the Pastry, pass the tail through a stitch between R9 and R10 of the Pineapple Jam to anchor the edge of the Pastry in place.
3. Secure and hide the end inside the work.
Make as many or as few pineapple tart rolls as you want!

This CNY will be our first one in our new home, Hubby and me. I'm not the sort to go all-out decking my home with festive decorations. But I did put up a large-ish display of pussy willow in our entryway, complete with pan chang knots and decorative tassels. Just a little bit, for the CNY festive mood. Though it was also an excuse to finally take out the Sakakura Masahiro vase we had in storage for a while.
Wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year, 马到成功, 万马奔腾, 一马当先, 飞黄腾达!
