Amigurumi Bake Off 2021, Week 2 — Fairy Bread (Belle & Grace HMC)

It was the day before Becky's birthday party.
"What would you like to eat at the party" asked her mother.
"Um," said Becky.
"Chips?" said her mother. "Chocolates? Peanuts?"
"Um," said Becky.
"Ice cream?" said her mother. "Jelly?"
"Um," said Becky again. She was thinking very hard. Finally she decided.
"Fairy bread," said Becky.
"Fairy bread?" said her mother. "That's it? Fairy bread? Nothing else?"
"Just fairy bread," replied Becky.
Delicious!

The item for the 2nd week of the Amigurumi Bake Off was fairy bread! An Antipodean classic first mentioned in 1929 in the Hobart Mercury, fairy bread is synonymous with children's birthday parties in Australia. Since it's part of a typically Aussie childhood, it's also nostalgic for Aussie grown ups. It's such a staple classic Down Under that there's even a Fairy Bread Day!

Fairy bread is an easy and inexpensive snack. It takes only around 5 minutes to make since it comprises of only 3 ingredients — sliced white bread, butter, and rainbow sprinkles (hundreds and thousands Down Under). The fairy bread by Amanda of Belle & Grace Handmade Crochet (pattern here) took a lot longer than 5 minutes, but was much more fun to make!

I originally wanted to use Toho seed beads 11/0 rounds for the  sprinkles, but changed my mind and ended up using yarn scraps, as per the pattern. I also was not able to complete it in time for the Bake Off deadline. So my fairy bread is missing limbs and wings. Oh well....

Working on her gave me a craving for sugar toast — a slightly different childhood snack that is made with white or brown sugar instead of rainbow sprinkles. We don't do fairy bread here, but we do sugar toast. As a child, I ate this as a quick breakfast snack sometimes. Perhaps I'll make a crocheted sugar toast as company for my fairy bread!

With the chocolate chip sourdough brioche baked by my talented friend AL. Yum!

Totally looking forward to the next Amigurumi Bake Off item! I love the crochet amigurumi food designs by Anne (@craftygibbon), and am totally psyched up to brandish my hook on one of her patterns!
