Amigurumi Bake Off 2021, Week 8 — Cream & Jam Scone (Flo and Dot)

It's week 8 of this year's Amigurumi Bake Off, and this wonderful, and creative crochet-along challenge has come to a close. It started and ended in the UK, first with Alexa Templeton of Lex In Stitches with something very Swedish (here), and finished with Sarah-Jane of Flo and Dot with something very English — the cream and jam scone (pattern here pattern now on Etsy).

This post marks the last week of this year's Amigurumi Bake Off. I'm a little sad that it's over, but it is by no means the last of the crochet adventures! It has been a great learning experience, I've had lots of fun, and am very thankful for the generosity I've experienced in the past 8 weeks of this crochet-along #amigurumibakeoff challenge. And I really hope there will be another bake off like this next year!

I love afternoon tea, and I especially love scones with clotted cream, and fruit jam or some kind of thick fruit compote. So while making Sarah-Jane's adorable scone pattern, I was getting some serious cravings for some warm scones, with loads of cream, jam, and some finger sandwiches. I especially love finger sandwiches in an afternoon tea as well, and am very partial to cucumber, egg-mayo, and smoked/cured salmon.

Afternoon tea is not a foreign concept here in Singapore. In fact, afternoon tea is very popular here, from the high society tai-tais to the rest of us when we want to leisurely wile an afternoon away with friends. It's sometimes referred to as high tea here, even though afternoon tea and high tea are actually traditionally different.

Afternoon tea was imported from the British when Singapore was a British colony (1819-1963). And though Singapore ceased being a British colony in 1963, she is still part of the Commonwealth, and continue to retain various concepts that the British established here, including our system of government, our judicial system, among other things. And of course, afternoon tea. That said, the major cultures that make up our multicultural country all have a deeply-rooted appreciation of tea, and have their own forms of tea culture.

The scone pattern by Sarah-Jane is fairly easy, and can be attempted by any beginner. The cream for the scone is a little devilish. I learnt on my 2nd attempt that I had to twist the panel a few times before joining the ends, in order to get that twisted appearance done correctly. That made it a little harder to sew together, but with some perseverance and a little twisting around........

Once again, I gave in to the urge to tweak the pattern, and modified it so that the lid for the scone bottom was the strawberry jam instead. That is, for the scone bottom, instead of changing to the red yarn, I just worked an additional 2 rounds of 48dc/48sc in the same yarn for the scone (I used beige, as I didn't have ecru). Then, for the lid (which became the jam), I worked it entirely in red yarn. After round 8, I worked another 3 rounds: the 9th round with 48dc/48sc in the front loops only. The 10th round I followed round 14 of the scone bottom (the one with the bobble stitches). And the final, 11th round, I worked a bunch of dc/sc, htr/hdc, dtr/dc stitches to get that undulating edge. When assembling together the lid and scone bottom, I whip stitched the unworked back loops of round 9 through both loops of the last round of the scone bottom — this assembly method was something I learnt from Lauren Espy's Crochet Cafe.

The scone was one of the first baked items I learnt in Home Economics class at school... It is an easy bake recipe, but it is not easy to make the perfect scone. Speaking of scone recipes... here's the recipe for the fruit scones that the British royal family enjoys (recipe here), shared by the Royal Pastry Chefs. Speaking of the British royal family...The UK has been in mourning the past week, following the passing of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, and yesterday was the funeral. A little belated, but my deepest condolences.
